Hygiene Products. Care for the Residual Limb.

For daily care, it is recommended to use a contrast shower for the residual limb, followed by washing it with baby soap and drying it with a soft towel. A gentle massage of the residual limb helps restore blood circulation, normalize skin sensitivity, and adapt the nervous system to the absence of the limb. For the prevention of excessive scar tissue growth and adhesions, as well as for their treatment, a deeper massage with small circular movements is necessary. Often, pain is caused by adhesions in the scar tissue. However, massage should be avoided until swelling subsides.

For patients with diabetes or circulatory disorders, longer treatment is required, and they have an increased risk of infection in the surgical wound. For this group of patients, who are more prone to developing skin complications, it is advisable to use special medicated products for residual limb care.

Sometimes after surgery, hypersensitivity of the skin develops, where even a light touch can be painful. In such cases, soothing the skin can be done with a light massage using a moisturizing lotion (without fragrances and alcohol). Gradually introducing the skin to contact with different materials over time reduces nerve hypersensitivity. To do this, the skin should be massaged with very soft materials (such as cotton), gradually progressing to coarser and firmer materials (hard balls, etc.).
